My Muse Experience II - 3rd February 2010 - Singapore Indoor Stadium

The second time I see Muse. Where do I begin? You know how some things are just hard to explain in words? I'll try my very best.

It all began at 4pm.

If you've been keeping up with my blog, you'd know that I had a FYP presentation on the very same day (late afternoon). It began at almost 4pm and ended forty-five minutes later. The gates were scheduled to open at 5.30pm. I had to get there before gates open in order to join Shikin, Afiq and Isa in the queue. They were the first 50 people in line!

With the typical forward-looking mind that I have, I had it all planned out. I brought extra clothes since it would be stupid to attend the concert in formal wear. Then where shall I dump my bags? There are lockers at the Singapore Indoor Stadium (SIS) but being late, I didn't wanna go through what could be a lengthy process of finding the locker or putting my bags with those security/usher people.

My friend gave me the ingenious idea of dumping my bag at the gym locker. I did as such and it was a good decision.

Bought a chocolate bar to ensure I won't be on an empty stomach and faint during Muse. That's not a good thing innit?

The cab ride to SIS felt like forever thanks to the evening rush hour traffic.

When I got there, I wasn't allowed to join the rest in the queue. Had to go all the way to the back. I thought the night was ruined.

The gates opened at 6pm and it took forever to enter the arena. The first opening bad had already started. I didn't care though. I ain't a fan of Saosin or Rise Against. I didn't even know which band was playing when I entered.

I was approximately 30metres from the barriers. I had to get closer before Muse performs.

With some skill, I pretended to mosh with the crowd but I'd mosh forward. Every few minutes, I'd get a few metres forward. Magic. By the end of the 2nd opening act, I was already 5metres from the barriers.

Shikin had texted me their location; centre and slightly off to the right. I made a calculated guess and moved in that direction. Before Muse began, I managed to find them. Wow. Miracle. We were like 2 metres from the barrier. My amazing night was about to begin

And now the best part. Muse took the stage at 10pm. And I really mean it when I say they took the stage. They took the stage and owned it. Matt strutted onto the stage with his right hand in the air waving.

I was never a big fan of the song Uprising. I converted into one when the bass intro kicked in and we all started jumping in rhythm. The three large screens was lit with a mix of visuals from on-stage cameras and pre-designed ones.

Uprising sounds awesome live. Suddenly, a mile-wide smile on my face. The solo was even better as Matt moved centre stage and punched his fist into the air while playing. His custom-made Manson Guitars sound really good.

Then came Supermassive Black Hole. The first word in this song title says it all. It may sound like a pop song but it's really good live. The visuals was good. The dancing robots was something I've always seen on youtube but seeing it on a 3 large screens was even better.

Map of the Problematique. Good song good song. Having watch plenty of Muse on youtube and once in 2007, I could predict when this song was about to come on. Nevertheless, I like this song and the ending riff was delicious. I focused on Dom (the drummer) during the verse. I don't know why but I like the drumming for that part of the song. When I flash back and recall that I did the same in 2007, I smiled to myself; grateful that I'm seeing them for the second time in my life.

Hysteria. Chris took centre stage and kicked off with the opening bass riff which received screams of approval from the crowd. This song is like a Muse anthem.

I want it now
I want it now
Give me your heart and your soul.

Resistance. One of my favourite songs off their latest album. The slow haunting intro accompanied by keys. This song is full of win. The chorus is even better.

Love is our resistance
They'll keep us apart and they won't stop breaking us down
Hold me
Our lips must always be sealed

Singing along to something as heart-warming and inspirational as this is something money can't buy. Actually, $161 is enough. I hadn't take any pictures or videos up to this point of the show.  I took out my camera and took pictures during parts where the crowd was slightly tame.

Stockholm Sydrome. Another epic song. This song is usually played at the end of the concert. However, they have been playing it somewhere in the middle of their set during this tour. I remember back in 2007 how Afiq and I were learning how to play this song on guitar. Extremely fun.

Look to the stars
Let hope burn in your eyes
And we'll love and we'll hate and we'll die
All to no avail, all to no avail

I managed to take a picture and record part of the chorus.

Nishe + United States of Eurasia. The latter is off their latest album as well. The song was preceded by an instrumental intro (Nishe). The visuals during this song was stunning and mindblasting. My father likes this song so I recorded half of it to show him. After all, I bought the tickets with part of the birthday money he gave me.

During the Nishe intro. See these people on the screen? They're actually fans. Muse asked fans to submit pictures of themselves if they wanted to be featured in the visuals. And these people submitted.

See, aren't these nice?

Sunburn. This is a song from their very first album. I like this song but I wish they played Cave instead. They've been playing it recently in Europe and I was hope they would for us Singaporean fans. Furthermore, they played Sunburn back in 2007 already.

Helsinki Jam. As the name implies, it is a jam by Dom & Chris (Drum & Bass). Watching this on youtube does not do this jam any justice. None whatsoever. The bass riff is extremely good. Just like the Hysteria bass intro, the bass lines of this jam is a testament to his ability.

Matt Bellamy may be the charismatic lead singer/guitarist who gets more attention but Chris & Dom proved here that this is no one-man band.

Undisclosed Desires. This is when the visual orgasm begins. We were told by the organisers that there'll be plenty of lasers. And I was eager to see it since there weren't any prior to this song.

This ain't definitive Muse song. It's one of those songs where the band goes experimental and tries something new. Matt plays a keytar here. And he does it better than that The Click Five dude.

And since I'm not a huge fan of this song, I spent plenty of time taking pictures or recording videos.

The next two pictures are what I would call, the tip of the iceberg. These pics do not do any justice to the visual orgasm. If you look to the back of the stadium, it looks even nicer. I think you'd have to be far from the stage (seated) to completely see the visuals. Regardless, it was still amazing despite being very near the stage. These ain't ordinary spotlights by the way. Click here if you're interested.

MK Ultra. Whoa. They didn't play this song when they started touring. But based on fan feedback, they did. If memory serves me right, Matt said that this song is tough to play and sing at the same time. He's definitely right.

This song once again proves that Muse sounds better than on CD. They should just play their new songs live and record it for their album.

Starlight. Like Undisclosed Desires, this is another song for which I'm not a huuge fan. But there's something about it this time that made me enjoy it thoroughly. This is another song in which there were lasers. And even better if you ask me!

Matt walked off the mic and let the crowd sing the first chorus.

Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations
Our hopes and expectations
Black holes and revelations

Hearing 11,000 people singing this is epic. Lets not forget the clapping part at the beginning of the song.

Ok, here are even better pictures.

This is the best picture I took at the concert. This, does some justice to the beautiful looking laser-fest and visuals. This is what I meant by lasers! Damn cool if you ask me.

Time is Running Out. Aaah. This is a song that they must play. Definitely a crowd pleaser. The chorus really keeps the crowd on their feet. Everyone was jumping in rhythm with it.

Shikin, Afiq and I had our arms on each other's shoulders and jumping together. One of the highlights of this concert. Isa was missing. Lol.

No pictures during this song. I was busy enjoying myself.

Unnatural Selection. One of the better tracks from their latest album. I think they played this song really really well. They exceeded my expectations with this song. The ending Metallica-esque riff was a great way to end the song.

They'll laugh as they watch us fall
The lucky don't care at all
No chance for fate
It's unnatural selection
I want the truth

And then they walked off stage. This is the part where the crowd cheers for an encore. They came back out really fast.

In truth, the encore thing is just part of the show. Every band does that. They walk off for a few minutes and come back with a few more songs to end the show.

Exogenesis Symphony Pt.1 (Overture). Their latest album consists of a 3-part symphony. They only played the first part. I was impressed. I thought it'd be a boring performance.

There's no better way to start the encore.

Plug in Baby. Ah yes you can't have a Muse concert without this song. The crowd went nuts when the opening riff was played. Everyone sang along to the tune of the opening riff. Back in December 2005, Afiq and I were obsessed with this song.

My plug in baby
Crucifies my enemies
When I'm tired of giving, whoa
My plug in baby
In unbroken virgin realities
Is tired of living oooh

Huge white balloons were released at the end of the song. I knew the balloons would come but I was distracted by Matt Bellamy playing the outro riff with the guitar at the back of his head.

I think these two pictures turned out really well.

Knights of Cydonia. And now for the epic closer. It began with a cover of Ennio Morricone's Man With a Harmonica. A epic way to introduce an equally epic song. I was looking forward to this song all night. And it delivered.

So how do I conclude such an amazing show?

It was definitely better than the 2007 show at Fort Canning Park. The entire production is much better this time. The large screens with nice visuals compliment the songs really well. Not forgetting the lasers which I mentioned repeatedly.

Prior to the show, I expected a boring setlist which consists mainly hits. The setlist could have been better with songs like Citizen Erased or more from their Origin of Symmetry and Showbiz album for example. Nevertheless, each song played was crisp and perfect so no complains there.

Muse has received countless Best Live Band awards and that night, they showed 11,000 people why they deserve every single one of them. For them, 11,00 people is a small crowd juxtaposed to the 90,000 people they played to during their 2007 Wembley Stadium concert but they still gave us our money's worth.

I paid $161 for the ticket and I'd gladly pay more. They obviously put in effort into making the show look good.

I enjoyed every minute of it. Undeniably the best night of my life. They played for an hour and forty minutes. I bought the tickets the moment it went on sale back on 16th November. I have been looking forward to this for two and a half months. The wait was worth it and they exceeded my expectations.

I knew they'd be amazing, but they were beyond that. They gave us so much, and then some.

The evening started off on the wrong note since I arrived late (no thanks to FYP) and I expected a mediocre experience. I was wrong. By God's miracle, I managed to make my way forward during the opening acts (whom i didn't really care about) and find Shikin, Afiq and Isa.

I'm also glad that the pictures and videos I took turned out pretty good. I didn't see the need to bring my DSLR. It would be pointless anyway. Why do some people care so much about taking extremely nice pictures? If you want nice pictures, just go to the band's website and there'll be plenty. I'm there to have a good time thus, I only took pictures or videos during the less exciting parts.

These are my three favourite pictures.

Group photos.

Right after Knights of Cydonia!

Goodbye Muse. See you again, I hope.

By the end of the show, my t-shirt was soaking wet, my back was aching and I couldn't feel my legs. I think I literally ran a marathon in the Singapore Indoor Stadium. It was all worthwhile. Best night of my life.

For those who weren't there, I must stress that you missed out on the best concert in Singapore. Muse is a band with pure talent, no gimmicks and definitely not a trend.

The difference between FAIL and WIN

This is my CCA records in Singapore Poly. I've only accumulated five points throughout 3 years. FAIL!

I clocked around 38 hours in less than a month in the online multiplayer for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. WIN!

my batmobile

Driving test tomorrow. This will be my second time taking the test. I really want to pass this time around even though my family doesn't own a car. I will be doomed if I have to take the test again since the new traffic police rules will make it harder.

This is my dream car; the motivation to study hard. Who needs a Batmobil when you have something like this?

It may be twenty years till I might be able to afford this but I must still pass the driving test tomorrow.

we plan, but God decides

Pardon me. I don't have a fancy iPhone nor a Blackberry with a cool organiser. I record important stuff my text book or in my head. I wrote all these down on Tuesday, 19th January.

I do not apologize for my bad handwriting. My parents tried for years to make me write neatly like a girl but to no avail. I actually have to put in extra effort to make it neat.

Note: 2nd column from the right, Muse =)
It's right below FYP Presentation. Well, technically, it is right after the presentation.

Actually there are more items to be written but I have not done it. Someday, someday. School has been tough for the past couple of weeks and I still see no light at the end of the tunnel.

Good luck to all poly students. The end is nigh.

Nenek <3

Me, twenty years ago with my grandmother.

This blog entry is dedicated to my beloved grandmother who left us earlier this week on Tuesday night, 19th January 2010.

Initially, I did not want to blog about this but given that I've blogged about Emma Watson and Muse for countless times, my late grandmother, without a doubt, definitely deserves a mention.

I'm fortunate that she lived with us for the most part of my childhood. The bedroom at the end was occupied by her for years. We even called it nenek's room until a few years ago when Afzal shifted into that room.

She left behind more than 30 grandchildren. I will cherish the memories I have with her ranging from our breakfast sessions where we dipped biscuits into Nescafe, her love for KFC, Mentos and those Rabbit Sweets, and course, her never-waiving and all-doting love.

My prayers go out to her. Amin.

Thanks to the goddamn motherfucking FYP, I won't be able to queue at 9am and assure myself a first row standing position. I am obviously disappointed and devastated. Oh well.

I'll try my best to enjoy myself even though I'm short and people in front will block my view.

And even if my FYP presentation is fucked up, I will still scream my hearts out to every song they'll play and jump around till my legs go sore.

I was right at the fucking front when Muse played here in 2007. Trust me when I say I was able to watch every single movement Matt Bellamy made. It won't be the same as standing 50 metres away and trying to tip-toe for a better look.

Argh screw you FYP.

Gaming, serious business

Some LOL for you.

When the most important thing in your life right now isn't going well, you take everything else very seriously. Even a defeat in Winning Eleven feels like the end of the world.

Meh.
